Abigail Lund

Graduating Class: Spring 2022
Major: Classics (Latin)
Why Classics: For me, studying Classics has promoted intellectual and personal growth in many ways. Studying language pushes me to break down complex passages into understandable pieces and studying ancient cultures gives me a unique perspective on modern culture. I especially love the way that learning Latin pushes us to analyze and understand our own language on a deeper level. I hope to instill the same passion for Classics in students as a Latin teacher in a few years.
Isabella Grado

Isabella Grado

Graduating Class: Spring 2021
Major: Classics, Latin Concentration
Why Classics: I was first exposed to Latin in first grade and immediately fell in love. My immersion into the language fostered my interest in the lives of Ancient Romans and Greeks. I believe that pursuing a degree in Classics will be a great foundation for any of my future endeavors.

Abigail Bright

Graduating Class: Spring 2020
Major: Classics, Latin Concentration
Why Classics: I am in my eighth year of learning Latin, and I’ve always loved the eloquence of the language. I am also studying to pursue a career in medicine one day, and I believe Classics is the foundation of my education. I firmly believe that loving medicine is to innately care for people and culture. What I’m learning now gets to the heart of the evolution of medicine and of people over centuries.
Best Thing About Classics at UVA: The community of this department has really become a home for me on Grounds, where there are always good conversations and brilliant people.

Sallie Blanks

Graduating Class: Spring 2019
Major: Classics (Latin) and Education
Why Classics: Classics incorporates diverse fields such as history, philosophy, art, government, and religion, to name a few. By reading the texts of these ancient authors, I gain perspective on more than just the world of prominent ancient civilizations. Because of my studies in Classics, I can examine the world around me outside of my own frame of reference through alternative methods of thinking. Also, it's fun.
Kerith Fern

Kerith Fern

Graduating Class: Spring 2019
Major: Classics, Latin Concentration
Why Classics: I started learning Latin as a young girl, and although at the time I despised the proverbial 'dead' language, I completely fell in love with it the longer I spent with it. Ancient history and culture affects so much of modern-day life in ways many would not even notice, and I was completely fascinated by the myriad of connections. Classical studies are truly interdisciplinary: excellent writing skills, balance and mastery of several languages, anthropological studies, and history. I chose Classics not only because I love it, but it challenges me. I have personal relationships with every single Classics professor and that is truly a unique opportunity in college.

Joseph French

Graduating Class: Spring 2019
Major: English and Classics (Latin)
Why Classics: The important parts of English are built on what ancient Greco-Roman gamechangers were doing with words and ideas, so it's nice to try to understand where they were coming from.
Best Thing About Classics at UVA: I love the way it makes me think about the way I'm thinking.
Kira Mcbride

Kira Mcbride

Graduating Class: Spring 2019
Major: Latin DMP
Why Classics: The timelessness of the Classics is the essence of my passion for the ancient world. Sentiments expressed by ancient poets remain profound and compelling in our own time. The Classics continue to inspire authors, such as Dante and C.S. Lewis, who dare to add a twist of flair to the original tales. The Classics embody the continuity of the human experience. Homer and Vergil's laments for war and the pity of war are as insightful today as they were several thousand years ago.
Sarah Simmons

Why Classics: After almost 10 years studying Latin, I can't really imagine my life without it. Classics has given me a love for language, art, culture, and history that I don't think I could've acquired anywhere else.

Graduating Class: Spring 2018
Major: Politics Honors & Classics (Concentration in Greek)
Why Classics: Through the study of the Latin and Greek languages, I have had the great honor of pursuing grammatical perfection and exploring the ancient roots of wisdom and reasoning. Similar to an archaeological dig, my study of Classical languages plunges me into the depths of the past and guides me to explore the rudiments of human civilization. The relics that I discover are memoirs of our transcendent history, which pave a meaningful and insightful past to my everlasting future.

Max Novick

Graduating Class: Spring 2018
Major: Classics (Concentration in Latin) and Commerce (Finance)
Why Classics: I have been taking Latin since middle school and Ancient Greek since high school, and I have continued these pursuits through a Classics Major at UVa. By inhabiting these antiquated authors’ minds every time I embark on a new text, I am able to acquire entirely new ways of thinking, arguing, and presenting information. Reading Latin and Greek is a cathartic experience that allows me to develop my critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Emma Clark

Graduating Class: Spring 2016
Major: Classics (Concentration in Latin) and Public Policy & Leadership; minor in Global Studies in Education
Why Classics: I chose to major in Classics because ancient roman and greek texts are so full of vivacious content and intriguing syntax that they can keep me entertained forever. Major: Religious Studies & Classics
Why Classics: I’m studying classics in preparation for a hopeful career in academic theology. So here I am!
Best Thing About Classics at UVA: We have an amazing faculty! They’re geniuses. They’re also nice, and they actually want to have a relationship with their students. Oh—and, of course, the Constantine Library.

Plus, the languages have given me a greater appreciation and understanding of English.
