Latin placement for incoming students is handled in various ways:
1. If you have not previously studied Latin, you may enroll directly in LATI 1010 (Elementary) or LATI 1030 (Intensive First-Year Latin).
2. If you have studied Latin previously AND have scored a 4 or 5 on the Latin AP exams(s), OR a 5, 6, or 7 on the higher-level IB exam, OR a 650 or higher on the Latin SAT II exam, your foreign language requirement is fulfilled, and you may enroll directly in Latin at the 3000 level.*
*The Department, following University guidelines, awards 3-6 units of credit at the 3000 level to students who score a 4 or a 5 on the Latin AP exam(s). For IB students, a score of 5, 6, or 7 on the higher-level exam earns 3 credits for Latin 2020. An SAT II Test score of 650 or higher means your Foreign Language Requirement is fulfilled, but no transfer credit is awarded.
3. If you have studied Latin previously AND have taken the SAT II exam with a score below 650, you should follow the Placement Instructions.
4. If you have studied Latin previously but have NOT taken the SAT II exam you will need to take the department's online Latin placement diagnostic prior to our summer orientation session. Contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Coulter George to register for placement and receive instructions. Please use your UVA email in contacting Prof. George, or include your computing ID in the message.
