Tristan Doan
Graduating Class: 2025
Major: Classics and Mathematics; Minors in Religious Studies and Philosophy
Current Studies: Tristan Doan is currently studying at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford, where he is reading for the 1-year MSt in Ancient Philosophy through the Philosophy Faculty. His thesis shall examine the interplay between the Socrates of the early Platonic dialogues and the “sophists” such as Callicles, Prodicus, and Thrasymachus who serve as interlocutors; in particular, he seeks to identify and comment upon those methods whereby Socrates, who has in mind positive definitions of the Just and the Good etc., combats proto-nihilism or proto-pragmatism among such figures. In his spare time he enjoys studying St. Augustine and chess
Why Classics: In addition to always being fascinated by the Roman and Greek civilizations in their own right, a strong understanding of the language, the culture, the history, and the thought of the classical world are the root of almost everything I have ever cared about studying. From mathematics to philosophy to theology to history to literature, nothing is exempt from powerful influence by the Greeks and the Romans. Therefore this major for me is the most important stepping stone in my academic life, a powerful catalyst which I can employ regardless of the direction I turn next!
